A modern retelling of an ancient story through the eyes of its forgotten female character.

SYNOPSIS

After years of working as a call girl, Cate discovers that her first love has moved back to town. She’s given the chance to leave the sex trade and lead the life she thought she always wanted, but her journey is challenged by substance abuse, mental illness, and the messiness of love. In the midst of that darkness, she must fight to gain a sense of self-worth and self-acceptance.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

I have always been fascinated by the spiritual stories important to various faith traditions and the role they play in how we understand themes of Love and Redemption.  The story of Hosea and Gomer is one of the most often used narratives - by two of the largest religions in the world - because of its depiction of unconditional love.

However, in college as I studied Theology, I developed the nagging sense that we often sanitize these stories down to their essential themes, without struggling with the real-life contexts in which they happened.  The allegory gets told and re-told so many times that the original concrete details become nebulous and vague.

Over time, the people in our most important stories slowly turn into flat abstractions of a particular idea that a faith community wants to depict. They stop being real people. The implicit danger then becomes, we stop seeing ourselves in them. I found myself wondering: What would a very-real Gomer look like in our world today?

So I set out to tell that story; to show her world, as it might exist now.  I wanted to approach her story from a place of deep empathy in recognizing that we are each like her.  All of us have wondered - if the darkest thing about us were known - could we still be loved?

AVI NASH enjoyed a nomadic childhood, moving from New Jersey to Georgia to Texas. The son of immigrants from South America and India, he grew up amongst varied accents, languages, and cultures.

Nash attended Stanford University, where his creative nature began to take over, and he left his studies twice: first to study acting in Mumbai; and later, to study literature in Madrid. He graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Architectural Design, only to backpack across South America, settling in Buenos Aires.

Eventually Nash found his way to Los Angeles and later, London. There he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), earning his MA in Classical Theatre. During this time, he appeared in the stage productions of Othello, The Way of the World, Don Juan, Tis Pity She’s a Whore, and an abridged version of Shakespeare’s First Tetralogy.

Nash made his feature film debut alongside Sir Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson in Isabel Coixet’s Learning to Drive. He also appeared opposite Devon Terrell and Anya Taylor-Joy in the critically acclaimed Obama biopic Barry, and guest-starred on the Emmy winning HBO series Silicon Valley.

He is best known for portraying Siddiq on AMC’s The Walking Dead, and was promoted to season regular during Season 9, the series all time highest-rated season.

When he’s not acting, Nash can be found on the soccer pitch, the side of a mountain, or in the kitchen. He recently accomplished a trek to Everest Base Camp and completed a stage at a renowned bakery in Rennes, France.

Nash resides with his backpack between London, Lisbon, and an ever-changing plane ticket.
